Hey lovelies!
Spring has sprung, and you know what that means: Spring cleaning season!
Although to be honest, I clean my closet all year round.
Why? A clean, organized closet is the best. If you think about it, your closet is a huge part of how you start your day. You have to get dressed at some point, right?
Plus, an organized closet that displays all your clothes helps you plan your outfits (and give you space to add new pieces!)
That’s why today’s post is all about my happy place- my closet. In particular, I’m talking about how I organize and style my closet to make dressing one of the best parts of my day!
How I Organize My Closet
Add Shelving to Your Closet
Shelving at all levels accomplishes two things: one, you can add additional wall space to organize shoes and accessories. Two, you can add decor and your best-looking items to the top of the shelves to create a chic, stylish environment for your styling!
One of my favorite pieces is this gold display shelf that has additional brackets for hanging clothes. I use the top to display some of my favorite mementos, and these fun gold vases and feathers in light and dark pink shades!
This decor is inexpensive, but adds a fun, boutique quality to the interior of my closet.
Speaking of decor tips, here are some golden rules:
- Great decor pieces (and photo backdrops) to include in your closet are mirrors, art pieces, color pops, and wallpaper.
- Think twice about adding flowers, books, and stuffed animals that collect dust and make everything look dingy.
Strategize Storage of Bulky Clothes
Bulky clothing is a necessity, but it’s not always the prettiest thing in your closet. Plus, chunky sweaters and jackets can take up so much space!
That’s where shoe organizers and cloth drawers can really help. Adding shelving to your closet or using existing shelving for organizers that can conceal your bulkier items. I use cloth drawers and bins to store my sweaters in neat rolls.
Purge Your Closet Ruthlessly
This is the hardest thing to do, but it must be done. In order to keep your closet light and pleasant, it’s important to remove items you no longer wear regularly.
To assist with your purge, figure out ahead of time what you’re going to do with the castoffs. Perhaps you could sell them on a site like Poshmark or Mercari, or donate them to a charity, shelter or a thrift shop.
Holding this intent in your mind will help you make hard decisions without looking back!
Also, establish a rule around what length of time is appropriate for you to not wear a piece before you donate it. Whether it’s 3 months, 6 months or a year, a firm deadline for not wearing an item in your wardrobe will also assist in your purge.
Add Mirrors
If you have the space, consider adding mirrors to your closet. This helps you see an outfit from all angles after putting it on, so you can feel comfortable and confident walking out the door.
On top of that, mirrors open up a space, reflect light and make your closet another pleasant room to be in, rather than a dark, cramped space.
Pay Attention to the Hangers You Use
Not all hangers are made equal! Paying extra for pretty hangers, like these rose gold hangers I adore, and slim hangers that take up less space will transform your closet.
Consider padded hangers and specially shaped hangers to help your clothes retain their shape. Plus, hangers all in the same color or style won’t distract the eye, allowing you to see your clothes and assemble outfits without distraction.
Use Office Organizing Hardware
If you want to keep your shelves tidy, you can get cheap and effective alternatives from the office section! Magazine files are usually the perfect shape and size to organize purses on a shelf. I use acrylic drawer organizers and makeup storage drawers for my accessories, like my sunglasses!
Tell a Color Story With Your Clothes
One of the key ways I organize my clothes is by color. I start with nude shades, and keep the rest in color categories. That’s what works for me. However, one of the tips I’ve never forgotten is setting up zones and systems around how you yourself think about clothes and getting dressed.
For example, when you think about putting on an outfit, do you think about pants or a shirt first? Or do you think about occasion or seasonality first? Unlocking how you think about getting dressed will inform the best organization strategy for you. After all, it’s your closet!
